Recently, rumors have been swirling on the internet that the Dragon Challenge (formerly Dueling Dragons) coaster could be torn down at Islands Of Adventure at Universal Orlando Resort.
With The Incredible Hulk coaster back open after a year-long replacement, it’s only fitting that The Dragon Challenge, which opened in 1999, receive some TLC.
However, the wait times for this ride are always less than 20 minutes and the popularity seems to be fading.
Now, before you get all upset like I did, perhaps we should think about what Universal could do with that massive section of theme park that the 2 dueling coasters occupy.
First of all, the coaster sits smack dab in the middle of Hogsmeade village, occupying enough space to almost double that area in size.
Secondly, there is enough space to build a new dark ride and even stage show theatre, (something Harry Potter desperately needs) as well as new restaurants and shops.
And thirdly, Universal just filed a patent for a new ride technology that would essentially allow ride vehicles to be covered by a moving screen followed by a quick release and drop, in a combo ride of tradition dark ride such as Forbidden Journey and part roller coaster such as Revenge Of The Mummy and Escape from Gringotts.
There’s also a patent for a puzzle theatre, that would move guests around in different directions, all centered around a stage.
It’s no secret that Harry Potter continues to be a massive success for Universal Orlando Resort and they’re looking to build on that popularity.
And since the Dragon Challenge coaster already sits in the Hogsmeade area, it makes sense to utilize that space rather than swallow up more park for the franchise.
Again, this is all speculation and mere rumors and Universal Orlando has yet to comment on if Dragon Challenge will be replaced, but just in case, I suggest you get your last rides in before the dragons are set free.
