Meet Julia, Sesame Street’s First Muppet With Autism

A few of my friends have children who have been diagnosed with Autism. They’re special, amazing, and definitely characters of their own. They still love things normal kids would, in moderation and in their own ways. The parents I know sometimes struggle, hate the feeling they are being watched or judged based on the kid’s behaviors. But that doesn’t change the fact that, we all need love. Some more than others.

I was really excited to see this. Sesame Street has been in the works of creating a muppet with Autism, one that people, families and kids can relate with. And the parents I know, are overjoyed.

Her name is Julia. She’s been in stories online since 2015- as the little red haired girl, holding a bunny. She’ll be making her tv debut in April. It’s definitely refreshing knowing that they are now going to help and continue educating children, as well as shedding light on what Autism is. Giving kids an understanding will help in the long run. According to 60 Minutes, the first episode will showcase how Julia is having a hard time being introduced to Big Bird. But then Elmo explains that Julia has Autism and she just ‘does things a little differently’.

We know that not everyone with Autism has the same reactions or actions or moods, etc. But I’m thinking that Julia has a long road with Sesame Street, I hope she becomes a regular and that emails and letters will flow into the show on personal situations, so that we can all start relating more.

Julia’s puppeteer will be played by Stacey Gordon, whose son has Autism.
