I’ll never take for granted how cool my job as a morning show host is and the awesome opportunities it provides me to meet and interview some amazing people. But a certain 14-year-old kid that I was reluctant to see in concert changed the way my 11-year-old daughter looks at me now, and for that I’m forever grateful.
Over the years working at Mix 105.1, my kids have been fortunate to be with me at concerts and at the radio station when some really cool celebrities have come by for interviews. My daughter Kiley isn’t really one to ask for pictures or autographs, even though I tell her she should, because one day she will have an awesome collection. So, she has a few, like that time when Flo Rida was in our lobby or when Sara Bareilles and Rachel Platten played Mix shows for us.
Long story short, Kiley isn’t really one to ask for concert tickets or to meet anyone…until about a month ago. She found out that an artist she’s been following on musical.ly named Jacob Sartorious was coming to play a show at Plaza LIVE near downtown Orlando. So, for about a month she would drop hints, mention she wanted to go and finally, Dad got the hint, and reluctantly on my only day off after three weeks, I took her and her friend.
Well, being such a fan of his, she asked me if there was any way I could get meet-n-greet, backstage passes, anything at all. And as a dad, you will do your best to make your kid smile, make memories that will last a lifetime, and attempt to up your “Dad Status” to cool dad. However, after trying a few different avenues, I came up short and had to break the news that Dad wasn’t successful, but she was happy just to be going to the show.
So, off we go on a daddy/daughter date night, which I was really excited about now because I could see her excitement growing in anticipation of seeing someone she admires so much. As we pulled up to The Plaza Live, the line of 10-14-year-old girls wrapped around the building. There were scattered parents and older siblings who were obviously there for the same reason, to see their little brother or sister or child watch this teen star rock the stage. But here’s what I didn’t expect…
After a few opening acts, the lights went down and the screams began from a packed house as Jacob Sartorious took the stage. Now, as a musician and radio DJ, I’m quite the hypocrite when it comes to judging music and talent. I don’t mean that in a negative way, more in a, “Does this person have what it takes to be the next BIG thing?” And here’s what I will say…lookout world, because this kid has what it takes!
From dancing around on-stage to a few of his hit singles like “Bingo” and “Sweatshirt” to strapping on the acoustic guitar for a slow jam, I was impressed. In fact, I was really impressed! The screams the entire show didn’t stop from the girls, but that wasn’t all. I saw moms and dads that were jammin’ out with their kids, singing every word to Jacob’s songs! Truthfully, I didn’t really know what to expect from him since I didn’t know much about Jacob. But he can sing, he can work the stage, he can play guitar, and he knows how to put on a good show!
I didn’t witness Beatlemania, but I did get to see how the boy bands of the world like N’SYNC and Backstreet Boys win over the hearts of millions of fans over the years. Not to mention Bieber, Shawn Mendes and more that I’ve seen in concert with their packed shows and adoring fans. Jacob Satoriuos is definitely doing something right, considering he has millions of views on YouTube, 7.7 million followers on Instagram and on Musical.ly he has 15.6 million followers and over a billion “likes,” this kid is a force to be reckoned with. He has what it takes to be the next really big thing!
But here’s where it gets better…
Kiley and her friend were near the stage and I gave them some space to enjoy the show without Dad standing over their shoulder. There they were, having the time of their life, holding up a “Jacob Satorious” sign wrapped in LED lights, dancing and singing to every song, as I stood and watched from about 20-feet away where most of the parents were hanging out. Well, nature called and I made my way to the bathroom. On my way back in, I stopped by the merchandise table to surprise the girls with maybe a shirt or souvenir.
I was chatting with the guys selling the merch at the table (imagine that, me strinking up a conversation with complete strangers) and there was another guy standing next to me. He asked, “How are you enjoying the show?” I told him that I was impressed and thought Jacob was good, but I’m here with my daughter who is the real fan. We talked for a few minutes about Jacob rockin’ the Orlando Magic jersey on-stage since I do some PA announcing for the Magic, about him being on tour and what’s coming up for Jacob. Next thing you know, we wrapped up the conversation and he asked, “How would you and your daughter like to meet Jacob after the show?” Are you kidding me? I think the look on my face said it all, when I replied, “You are about to make me “Dad of the Year” with my daughter!”
Turns out I happened to be in the right place at the right time and the gentleman I was speaking with was Jacob”s tour manager! I thought for a minute that this was too good to be true and maybe he was pulling my leg. We exchanged cell numbers, he told me where to meet him and now it was time to share the news with Kiley.
Jacob thanked Orlando for being great fans, he took his bow to some of the loudest screams and applause I’ve ever heard, and off he went backstage. Now, here comes Kiley and her friend and I wave to them to quickly get up to me. As she gets next to me, I take her hand and tell her to come with me. All this time, she just thinks I’m trying to hurry up and get out of there to beat the crowd, until I break the news to her…
We stand near a set of yellow barricades and she asks, “What are we waiting for?” I ask her and her friend, “How would you like to meet Jacob?” I can’t explain to you in words the look on my daughter’s face when she heard those words come out of my mouth. It was like she just saw Santa Clause riding a magical unicorn passing out free candy saying school is canceled for the rest of the year. As she stood there with her mouth open, Jacob’s team came and got us and escorted us backstage where there he was, Jacob Sartorious standing there waiting to meet my kid and her really, really happy dad.
Jacob took the time to say hello, take a picture with both Kiley and her friend and then I went up to him to shake his hand and thank him. I snagged a quick photo too. This kid is polite, he’s humble and he’s super-talented. And you know what? He truly elevated my dad status to “Super Cool Dad of the Year” in my daughter and her friend’s eyes.
So, to “Z” that I met at the merch table that made all of this happen, I thank you sir! To Jacob, keep on doing your thing my friend and next time I’ll be seeing you play at the Amway Center with 17,ooo+ fans! And to my kid, I love you more than you’ll ever know Kiley and I’m so happy you got to meet someone you admire so much. Thanks for taking the time to read this, it made my heart smile and I wanted to share it with you.
