Today, Billboard announced that Madonna has been named their 2016 Woman of the Year.
“Madonna is one of a miniscule number of super-artists whose influence and career transcend music,” according to Janice Min, president and chief creative officer of The Hollywood Reporter-Billboard Media Group. “With her creative vision, relentless innovation, and dedication to philanthropic causes, she is an inspiration to hundreds of millions of people around the world, all while shattering every career record out there. She is an important feminist on top of that, a one-of-a-kind artist who’s used her influence to change the conversation around women, sexuality and equal rights.”
It’s been a great year for Madonna where she maintained her status as the “highest-grossing female touring artist of all time.” She was also instrumental in the Prince tribute at this year’s Billboard Music Awards, made news with her Met Gala appearance, and has made continuous commentary via social media during the 2016 election season.
She will be presented with the honor at the 11th annual Women in Music event. It will be in New York City on December 9th and will air on Lifetime on December 21st.
Last year the award went to Lady Gaga.
