Rihanna has made a name for herself with wild dance-filled performances and crazy costumes. But for her latest video the Barbadian beauty bares all and unearths her true self.
“Stay,” off her seventh album Unapologetic, features singer/producer Mikky Ekko. It is a piano led, heartfelt ballad unlike anything RiRi has released before.
Directed by Sophie Muller, the video begins with Rihanna undressing and climbing into a bathtub. Stripped down and up close, the camera shows the singer slumped over with little to no makeup as she stares into the unknown with a look that is both contemplative and vulnerable.
She belts out the words, “Funny you’re the broken one/but I’m the only one who needed saving,” revealing an interesting comparison to her own love life — perhaps the impetus to the song.
Rihanna’s character fights back the tears as Ekko delivers a soulful verse full of raw emotions. The feelings eventually come to the surface towards the end of the video as Rihanna’s attempt to keep it all inside fails, marked by a single tear running down her cheek.
At Sunday’s GRAMMY Awards Rihanna took home the award for Best Short Form Music Video, but lost out on Best Pop Solo Performance to Adele and then Best Pop Vocal Album to Kelly Clarkson.
