When Beyonce left a mysterious message on her website last week, no one saw this coming. Blue Ivy’s mother has joined the United Nations to help kick off the World Humanitarian Day campaign.

She will be taping a video for her song, “I Was Here,” at the UN General Assembly Hall to raise awareness and to encourage others to help where they can.

“We all see the headlines and we think what can I really do to help?” Beyoncé said in a press release. “World Humanitarian Day is an opportunity for all of us to work together to make a difference. This is our time to leave our mark on the world and show that we were here and we care.”

Last week, Beyonce hinted at what was to come when she posted a cryptic message to her website that sent the music world into a tizzy of speculation.

“Leave your footprint on 19 August 2012,” is the messages she posted to Beyonce.com.

World Humanitarian Day, which falls on August 19, was proclaimed to honor those who have lost their lives in service of humanitarian causes. WHD was inspired by the 2003 Canal Hotel bombing in Baghdad, which claimed the lives of 22 UN staff members.

“World Humanitarian Day celebrates humanitarian work,” the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Valerie Amos, said in a news release. “I hope everyone will pledge to complete at least one humanitarian action – however great or small – through www.whd-iwashere.org. Together we can create an unprecedented awareness of the plight of people affected by crises around the world.”

The song “I Was Here,” which is from Beyonce’s 2011 album 4, is being donated by Beyonce and songwriter Diane Warren.
