The wait is finally over for Matchbox Twenty fans. The new MB20 single, “She’s So Mean,” was released today and The Morning MIX had the opportunity to chat with lead singer and hometown boy Rob Thomas about the new tune and plans for the band.
According to Thomas, “It’s just a fun summer song about a girl that every one of us has met at some point in their life.” But is it about a particular girl from HIS life? Turns out it’s not about any one particular person. “["She's So Mean"] is inspired by an amalgamation of girls. Not my wife!”
But if you happen to think this song is about you, it shouldn’t be taken as a compliment. Thomas laid it on the line, saying, “It’s called ‘She’s So Mean,’ and if you think it’s about you and you’re proud of that, I have a therapist’s number I want to give you.”
Thomas says it’s a fun and exciting time of life for Matchbox Twenty, but nerve-wracking as well. “You’re really excited because you want everyone to hear what you’ve been working on because you’re really proud of it,” Thomas gushed. “And at the same time you’re nervous because you’ve spent so much time on it and people are going to hear it for the first time.”
When the new CD North is released on September 4th, it will have been 10 years since Matchbox Twenty put out an album of all new music. So what took so long? It’s been a busy past 10 years for Thomas as a solo artist. “The whole time I was either in the studio or on the road. I haven’t been just sitting around eating Cheetos and twiddling my thumbs.”
“This was the one time where everybody was kind of ready, nobody was busy doing something else. To make the record that we wanted to make, to be as good as we want it to be, we had to set aside a huge part of our life to give to nothing but this record and now we’re ready to do that.”
