All of us know that eating junk food and just about anything fried isn’t good for us, that’s a given. But what about some of the things we eat on a weekly basis that we think are good for us, but in fact, they’re not? The scary thing is, I’ve eaten 4 of the 7 items on this list in the past week! Check out the 7 Foods You Should Never Eat and why, according to FOX News.
1. Canned Tomatoes
The lining of the tin cans most of our canned tomatoes come in contain bisphenol-A, which is a “synthetic estrogen” that has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
So, how do you avoid it? Buy your tomatoes in glass jars and bottles.
2. Corn-Fed Beef
A lot of farmers these days feed their cows corn and soybeans, which fatten them up faster before going to slaughter. It means more money for the cattle farmers and less nutrition for you and me. However, it’s cheaper at the grocery store for us.
So, another option? Buy grass-fed beef from specialty stores or ask your butcher at your favorite grocery store. It will be more expensive, but if you buy the mean bone-in, it will cost you less than boneless.
3. Microwave Popcorn
Chemicals in the lining of the bag have been linked to infertility in humans. And according to a UCLA study, the chemicals were found to cause liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer in animals. It’s such a problem that manufacturers have promised to stop using them and they will be removed from store shelves by 2015.
The solution? Pop natural kernels the old-school way, in a skillet! Then you can season them however you’d like.
I like a good baked potato, stuffed with cheese and sour cream! However, you might want to think twice if they’re not organic. The potatoes absorb various herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides that are in the soil. Once they’re out of the ground, they treat them again, so they don’t start to sprout out of the side of the tater. FOX News spoke to potato growers and some of them said they wouldn’t eat their own product they sell to you and me!
How to avoid all the chemicals? You can buy organic potatoes. They say even washing non-organic potatoes won’t get rid of all the chemicals inside the potato.
5. Farmed Salmon
What, you mean salmon aren’t meant to be crammed into pens on farms and fed soy and poultry litter? No, they’re not, and because of it, we suffer. Researchers say farmed salmon contains higher levels of contaminants and pesticides. They also treat the fish with antibiotics, says FOX News. Which means when you eat the fish, you’re ingesting those as well.
So, if you still love salmon, how do you avoid all the bad stuff? Start eating wild-caught Alaska salmon. Here’s a helpful tip, if the package says fresh Atlantic, that generally means it’s farmed.
6. Milk with Artificial Hormones
Milk producers give cattle hormones to increase the amount of milk the cows produce. These hormones can lead to infections in the cows and then we drink the milk. In addition, there’s a hormone in the milk called IGF-1 and in large amounts in humans, can contribute to breast, prostate, and colon cancers, says FOX News.
How to avoid the hormones? Look for milk that says rBGH-free, rBST-free, or produced without artificial hormones on the label. You can also just buy organic milk.
I eat apples and feed them to my kids all the time, so this one alarmed me! Apparently, apples have no resistance to pests, so apple growers spray them frequently. And while the apple growers say the residue from the pesticides aren’t harmful, eating chemicals can’t be good for us. Just make sure you wash your apples really well before you eat them and you can also buy organic apples, just to be on the safe side.
