[pullquote quote=”He’s very generous with his time when it comes to his fans.” credit=”Producer Jerry Bruckheimer (on Johnny Depp)”]The star power at Disneyland last Saturday night as the California theme park hosted the World Premiere of the fourth movie in the Pirates franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, was almost enough to light the entire park! We were lucky enough to be there in attendance to witness the celebrity arrivals and strolls down the “black” carpet. Plus, we got one of the first looks at the gorgeous 3D film as it was presented on a gigantic outdoor screen overlooking a pirate moat.
The movie’s stars and creative team seemed to be just as excited about the film and the event (which was a benefit for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America) as we were.
Here’s what they had to say:
Penelope Cruz (Angelica)
[photogallerylink id=52053 align=left]How was it becoming the first female pirate in the Pirates franchise?
Penelope Cruz: It was a lot of fun. It was six amazing months of my life traveling around the world with Johnny and Rob and all these amazing cast members. It was really one of the greatest experiences I’ve had working on a movie. I am a huge fan of what Johnny has created with this character so it is a huge honor to have been invited into the fourth one.
And what do you think of this huge turnout for the World Premiere?
PC: I mean it’s amazing to have our premiere at Disneyland.
Johnny Depp (Captain Jack Sparrow)
[photogallerylink id=52330 align=left]How does it feel returning as the infamous Capt. Jack Sparrow?
Johnny Depp: Number four, the fourth time out. Uhm, very exciting, you know, as always, very exciting and you hope…your one hope really is that, you know, people enjoy it, the kids, that people enjoy it you know, because that’s who we made it for. I mean to me, every time that I’m able to, you know, step into those raggedy old clothes is a gift…it’s a great gift.
The fans are extremely excited about having the World Premiere here at Disneyland. Is that exciting to you as well?
JD: Well that’s what’s really nice about doing this whole scenario at Disneyland, you know, is that it becomes this, you know, even more of a major event. People can really cut loose and have a good time. I mean it’s a huge energy, but what it is more than anything for me it’s an opportunity to sort of be able to give back, you know. Give back in a sense of like say thank you to the people, face to face, thank you. So that I do enjoy very much.
Geoffrey Rush (Barbossa)
[photogallerylink id=52812 align=left]Are you excited for the World Premiere?
Geoffrey Rush: I read stuff today online, or maybe it was in the paper, I saw the construction of the screen and everything, I don’t know, six stories high and ten stories wide. They planned this I think before we even started shooting the film. That’s a lot of pressure! (laughs)
How does this latest installment stack up to the rest of the franchise?
GR: Jerry Bruckheimer’s got a good, you know, traditional but exciting sense of events. And when you’re four films in, and we know we’ve got a good one, I saw it at the El Capitan four or five nights ago. And it just plays…it’s fantastic.
Ian McShane (Blackbeard)
How was it working on your first Pirates film?
Ian McShane: With Johnny and Geoffrey and Penelope it was terrific. We had a great time. Six months in Hawaii, LA, London, and I hear the film’s terrific. So we’ll see.
Keith Richards (Captain Teague)
You’re back as a pirate once more! Did you have a good time reprising the role?
Keith Richards: It’s fun, I almost feel like an old hand. It’s different for me. To me it’s a kind of bit of fun and a laugh, and I love working with Johnny. It’s about as cool as it gets.
Sam Claflin (Philip)
[photogallerylink id=52260 align=left]This is your first feature film, so it must all be very exciting!
Sam Claflin: I feel like that I’m in an absolute dream world, you know. None of this is real, right? I’m going to have to pinch myself a lot. But we’re here for the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and I’m very excited to sort of be a part of it. I can’t imagine I have many fans, but I’m looking forward to experiencing it for the first time. I’m very much shocked to be here…very, very shocked.
Kevin McNally (Joshamee Gibbs)
[photogallerylink id=51624 align=left]How does it feel to be back as Joshamee Gibbs once more?
Kevin McNally: We’re back for the fourth time. Who would have thought eight years ago that we’d be back here for the fourth one. But I think even better than before. I hope so anyway. I’m sure all these people will tell us very soon.
The fan support of the Pirates films is overwhelming. Can you believe how many have turned out today?
KM: Over the last eight years of course, I’ve become, uh, more literate with the internet so I can see that these people have this huge communication, particularly about today, and there’s been a great excitement about it and I don’t think they’re going to be disappointed.
Rob Marshall (Director)
[photogallerylink id=52290 align=left]What is the secret of keeping this franchise going?
Rob Marshall: The Pirates fans are incredible because they love this franchise so much, and we’re just so happy to give them another exciting adventure, we really are and this one’s really fun. I think it’s a real ride. I think it’s funny. I think it has great velocity and pace and Johnny is exquisite. And we have a female pirate with Penelope, so it’s really great.
This is your first time in the director’s chair for a ‘Pirates’ film. What drew you to the project?
RM: Johnny and this amazing character he’s created is the reason for these films. He’s so colorful, you know. He’s an extraordinary artist I have to say. He’s also an extraordinary person. And I think people feel that. You feel his heart. He’s that amazing, you know.
Jerry Bruckheimer (Producer)
[photogallerylink id=50992 align=left]The fan turnout for the World Premiere is amazing!
Jerry Bruckheimer: People have been lined up since last night, they stayed out all night to be here, and what’s exciting is this is a charity event also, and so we have fans from all around the world who bought tickets before it was announced that they were asking for tickets. So they’re real special to us and we’re excited to show them this movie in 3D, which is the first time we’ve ever done that.
What’s different about this ‘Pirates’ outing?
JB: Penelope Cruz, whose first time in a Pirates outfit, but she’s very beautiful and exciting and a wonderful actress. And we have a couple of new kids, Sam and Astrid, are our new young kids, and Ian McShane plays the baddie, Blackbeard.
It seems like it would be a lot of fun to be involved in these films.
JB: Well the fun is you make these pictures for the fans, and when they show their appreciation like this, you know, we’ve entertained hundreds of millions of people around the world with Pirates of the Caribbean, and that’s real exciting to us. To make people’s lives just a little better for a couple of hours.
What do you see as the true reason for the success of the ‘Pirates’ franchise?
JB: Well, Johnny Depp, you know, he’s such a wonderful man, it shines through on the screen. You know, the bigger the screen, the more you like him. He’s an irreverent character and he loves doing these and he loves his fans. He’s going to spend a lot of time, you know, talking to his fans, taking pictures with them, signing autographs. He’s very generous with his time when it comes to his fans.
