Today is Cinco de Mayo and most Americans celebrate by having a few cold ones and some delicious Mexican food.  However, do you know what you’re even celebrating?  Here’s 5 quick facts about Cinco de Mayo that will make you smarter than all of your co-workers.

#1.) Today is not Mexican Independence Day, that day is actually celebrated on September 16th, and it commemorates the day in 1810 when a Catholic priest declared war on Spain.

#2.) Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates a victory over France. In 1861, Mexico defaulted on loans from a bunch of countries in Europe, so France invaded. The French hadn’t been beaten in 50 years of battle, but on May 5th, 1862, the Mexicans won the Battle of Puebla.

#3.) Today is celebrated more in the U.S. than it is in Mexico. It’s not even a national holiday in Mexico and it’s mostly celebrated by people near the city of Puebla.

#4.) It’s Also Popular in Malta? Why you ask?  No idea.  Maybe they like to party.

#5.) Today is celebrated in Chandler, Arizona by racing Chihuahuas. If I knew this earlier, I would have entered my little guy, Chimi!  That’s him below!
